Australia's Skilled Migration Points System Explained: How to Maximize Your Score

Australia's points-tested visa system awards points for age, English, qualifications, and experience — here is how to maximize your chances.

Australia's Skilled Migration Points System Explained: How to Maximize Your Score

How the Points System Works

Australia's General Skilled Migration program uses a points-based system to select immigrants. The minimum pass mark is 65 points, but competitive occupations may require 80-90+ points to receive an invitation to apply. Understanding how points are allocated — and where you can gain extras — is essential for a successful application.

Points Breakdown

Age (maximum 30 points)

  • 18-24: 25 points
  • 25-32: 30 points (maximum)
  • 33-39: 25 points
  • 40-44: 15 points
  • 45+: 0 points (and generally ineligible for points-tested visas)

English Language (maximum 20 points)

  • Competent (IELTS 6.0 in each band): 0 points (minimum requirement)
  • Proficient (IELTS 7.0 in each band): 10 points
  • Superior (IELTS 8.0 in each band): 20 points

English proficiency is one of the easiest areas to gain additional points. Investing in IELTS preparation to move from Proficient to Superior gains you 10 points — often the difference between receiving an invitation or waiting indefinitely.

Skilled Employment (maximum 20 points)

Overseas employment in your nominated occupation:

  • 3-4 years: 5 points
  • 5-7 years: 10 points
  • 8+ years: 15 points

Australian employment in nominated occupation:

  • 1-2 years: 5 points
  • 3-4 years: 10 points
  • 5-7 years: 15 points
  • 8+ years: 20 points

Qualifications (maximum 20 points)

  • Doctoral degree: 20 points
  • Bachelor's degree or higher: 15 points
  • Diploma or trade qualification: 10 points
  • Recognized qualification in nominated occupation: 10 points

Other Points

  • Australian study requirement: 5 points (2+ years of study in Australia)
  • Specialist education qualification: 5 points (STEM Master's or PhD from Australian institution)
  • Regional study: 5 points (study in regional Australia)
  • Professional Year: 5 points (completion of an approved professional year program)
  • Community language: 5 points (NAATI-accredited translator credential)
  • Partner skills: 5-10 points (competent English and skills assessment for your partner)
  • State/territory nomination: 5-15 points (depending on visa subclass)

The Main Visa Subclasses

Subclass 189 (Independent)

No sponsorship required. Must score highly on points test. Occupation must be on the Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL). Grants permanent residency immediately. Most competitive — typically requires 80-90+ points.

Subclass 190 (State Nominated)

Nominated by a state or territory government. Adds 5 points to your score. Must commit to living in the nominating state for 2 years. Grants permanent residency. Slightly lower point thresholds than 189.

Subclass 491 (Regional)

Nominated by a state/territory or sponsored by an eligible family member in regional Australia. Adds 15 points to your score. Grants a 5-year provisional visa with pathway to permanent residency (subclass 191) after 3 years of living and working in a regional area.

Strategy to Maximize Points

  • Invest in English: Moving from Proficient to Superior IELTS scores is worth 10 points — often the most achievable improvement
  • Consider regional options: Subclass 491 with 15 extra points opens doors for applicants who might not qualify for 189 or 190
  • Partner skills: If your partner has a skilled occupation and competent English, this adds 5-10 valuable points
  • Community language: If you speak a community language, obtaining NAATI certification adds 5 points
  • Age timing: If you are approaching an age bracket boundary, submit your EOI before your birthday to lock in higher points

Processing Times and Costs

Typical timeline from skills assessment to visa grant is 12-24 months. Costs include skills assessment (AUD 300-900), IELTS test (AUD 340-410), visa application (AUD 4,640 for primary applicant), health examinations (AUD 300-600), and police clearances (AUD 50-200 per country).
